Drop the Coach Label

For some people, the most painful part of marketing their coaching business is admitting being a “coach.” This can be especially true for the dreaded “life coach” label, which still has a bit of “hippie drippie” connotation in certain parts of the world.

There is nothing wrong with being a coach. You should be proud of it.

But when you meet someone and tell them “I am a life coach,” it is really a conversation stopper. Example:

Person at networking event: “Hi, nice to meet you! What do you do?”

You: “I am life coach”

Person at networking event: “I see.” (eye rolling or superior tone optional)

Instead, use this useful adaptation of Robert Middleton’s “audio logo” which is broken down like this:

I work with …
Who struggle to…

This simple formula is much more of an accurate introduction, and a conversation starter. For example:

Person at networking event: “Hi, nice to meet you! What do you do?”

You: “I work with corporate employees who struggle to know how to start a business.” or

“I work with high-powered career women who have it all, but struggle to lose weight.” or

“I work with parents of Autistic children who struggle to communicate effectively with their non-verbal child.”

After hearing something like this, most people would say something like “that is interesting, how do you do that?”

Music to your ears!
